red hots

the definitive spicy cinnamon candy!

tootsie roll pops!

boston baked beans!

i had to buy a box of baked beans before i drew this; i’d never eaten them before! and, i suppose if you want chocolate-less candy-coated peanuts, these are the way to go.

snickers

this card is purple because snickers are candybar royalty.  snickers bars have been best sellers since their inception, and will probably always be huge sellers.  the brand typography is instantly recognizable–you totally know the snickers font.  nevermind that snickers are probably the sole reason that most people can define the word nougat.

for this one, i started out drawing peanuts wearing clown costumes (i don’t know? it was supposed to look like snickering peanuts?),  but as one might guess, that approach started to look a little weird.  one might even say unfriendly.  plus, the candy itself was named for a horse owned by the mars family, not after laughing legumes.

i took some pictures of all the tags tonight; while scanning them gets the point across, a bit of the clarity is lost.  i’d say i’m about halfway through at this point.  especially when a lot of “new” candy released in recent years has just been reiterations of existing formulas.  (i.e. hershey hugs to match hershey kisses) and also considering that i am not shy about editing.  for instance, in 1920? chuckles gumdrops were invented.  important, sure, but i was able to turn a blind eye.  otherwise, i’d spent the next decade hunched over shipping tags.

reese's peanut butter cups!

one of the best candy inventions ever! right down to its little crimped chocolate edges and crumbly peanut butter insides.

milk duds!

i always bite into a milk dud (chocolate coated caramel), expecting a whopper (chocolate covered malted milk ball).  and vice versa.  it doesn’t help that i ususally eat them only in a dark movie theatre, i suppose.

bit-o-honey

i don’t think i’ve ever actually eaten a bit-o-honey.  in my head, they are grouped with mary-janes and cowtails in the “halloween candy i steadily ignored in favor of kit-kats” category.

milky way candy bar

the mounds bar!

each package of mounds has always contained two small candy bars–it’s a marketing tactic leftover from the Great Depression. (if one candy bar is good, two are better! it makes you feel like your money has been well spent and that you’ve chosen the right candy.)

personally, i like mounds bars a lot.  however, i’ve always wanted mounds and almond joy to fuse into a single, more powerful candy bar.  aka: a dark chocolate coating over coconuts and almonds.
